Nilā explores one of India’s oldest Indigenous communities, the Irula people and their marveled relationship with the most venomous creatures of the continent, the snake. Recognized as the snake people of the south, the film shares the story of Maasi and Thangaraj, father and son, and proud carriers of the Irula legacy. Nilā is the second film in a series conceptualized by ASHYA entitled, Ode to Exploration, which sparks conversation around travel and pays homage to Indigenous communities and traditions. Storytelling is at the heart of the brand, with films as a visual extension of its explorations. The film’s launch coincided with the drop of the Irula Collection and a culturally immersive activation including a private film screening and panel discussion, moderated by Vogue’s Fashion Editor, Naomi Elizée.
Originally presented by NOWNESS, Nilā was featured in BlackStar and Urban Film Festivals 2020 selections.
Private film screening hosted at art gallery, Art Cake in Industry City, Brooklyn
